Dempsey had scored 42 KO's before stopping Big Jess. Some had feared for Dempsey's life as a former opponents Willard's, Young Bull, diedinjuries inflicted by Big Jess. Willard took over RDS 2 and 3, but could not continue after the third round. Fought in 110 degrees Fahrenheit, 43 degrees Celsius earn nickname "Massacre in the sun." Dempsey at 187 ½ lbs listed for Willard fight, but was actually 180th Firpo fought at 192 pounds against a couple of years later. Average man was 5'7 "in 1919. 6'6 ½", 245 pounds in the year 1919 was truly a giant. Dempsey was more famous in the 1920s as a baseball idol Babe Ruth.
